New
Zealand's first household computer recycling day
In September 2006, CANZ, with accredited refurbisher Remarkit Solutions,
the Ministry for the Environment and a Dominion Post ICT reporter, helped Dell Computer run New
Zealand's first computer recycling 'e-Day' for households. It was a roaring
success. Between 9am and 3pm a continuous stream of cars into Wellington's
Westpac Stadium delivered 4500 pieces of computer gear, including 1500 desktop computers, 1900 CRT monitors and
sundry other items such as printers and scanners. The total
weight of gear collected was 54 tonnes. This compared with about 10 tonnes
each at recent Dell collection days in Sydney and Brisbane. Some of
the equipment is being environmentally recycled in New Zealand, but all CRT
monitors were shipped to a Melbourne recycler, at Dell's expense. New
Zealand has no facilities which can safely handle and recycle
lead-impregnated CRT glass or the plastic cases. About 97 per cent of the
materials collected will be diverted from landfills. Below are some photos
taken during the event.
